Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana Part B

At the beginning of part B we read about the death of Rama's father Dasharatha. His funeral is conducted and sheer heartache comes over many but mainly his wives who would then go and spend 10 days mourning laying on the ground. Bharata is called to go and find his brother Rama to tell him of the news of their father and persuade him to return to Ayodhya. The two meet up in the forest and while Bharata cannot convince Rama to return with him, Rama does send his brother back with a sandal to represent him. Bharata in reply announces he will neither return to the city and will wait for Rama in the village.

Later on the three went into a forest where they were met by Viradha, a horrible and very dangerous beast! Viradha took Sita who became very scared. Rama and Lakshmana drew their bows and fought the man eating creature. They defeated Viradha and while on his death bed the creature gave his respect to Rama and applaud him for being so powerful. The three travelers went further into the forest where they met another Sage named Agastya. The sage eager for them to stay with him as he gave Rama more weapons they had other plans and continued to travel deeper in the forrest.

The adventures do not slow down there! We are introduced to Shurpanakha who is very fond of Rama but loyal and in with his wife, Sita. Rama does not allow for Shurpanakha to get close and instead suggest his single brother, Lakshmana. This greatly upsets Shurpanakha who retaliates tries to attack Site. The attack does not work out and she turns to her brother who is upset that his sister was denied. Khara raged an attack on Rama but like many before was defeated. Shurpanakha refusing for this to end travel to her other brother the King of Lanka, Ravana. Ravana's plan of attack is to abduct Sita and recruits a past foe of Rama's to help, Maricha. The two lure Sita in and gain her trust as they morphed into a golden deer and sage. The plan works and Sita is taken captive by Ravana. Rama and his brother learn about his wife being taken by the bird Jatayu who has been watching over the three during the journey. The brothers then begin the journey to find Sita.
