Topic Brainstorm
When brainstorming and looking through the different topics I can story tell about this semester I kept being drawn to the same topics, the women of Indian epics. I honestly looked at all the food, festival and God's stories but none of that is what I feel I will enjoy writing about when it comes time. There were four women who stuck out to me all with their own unique stories.
The first lady is Gandhari, Princess of Gandhara, wife to the blind king and mother of one hundred sons. To honor her husband, when the two were wed Gandhari vowed to be blind along with her husband for the rest of her days wearing a scarf to cover her eyes. Now that is love and commitment! She also under went great sorrow losing all 100 of her sons within 18 days as they waged war against their cousins. She had a wild pregnancy! It is said that she was pregnant for an extended amount of time and became very frustrated when Queen Kunti delivered her child first. Gandhari hit her stomach in anger and instead of a child a large mass came out that was then split up and incubated in 100 pots. It is said Gandhari was often "blinded" by the foolishness of her sons. She would go on to leave a legacy of loyalty and a temple Hebbya Village be named after her.

Next is Ulupi, a Naga princess who was half maiden and serpent. It is also said that the bottom half her of body was retile like resembling a snake. Ulupi was a well trained warrior and her father ruled the servants underneath the Ganga River. Ulupi finds her, Arjuna, and drags him while bathing in the river underneath to her kingdom. She convinces him to marry her and they have a son tighter. In a battle insinuated by Ulupi, her husband is killed but she is later able to bring him back to life with a gem. Ulupi would spend her retirement in her kingdom at the bottom of the Ganga River.

Sita, is the Hindo goddess who represents pretty much all things good. She represents characteristics such as good fortune, prosperity, success and quality character. Sita is the wife of Lord Rama and the leading lady of the Ramayana Epic. Sita would later be banished from the kingdom by her husband once pregnant as her loyalty was questioned by him. She would later return with her two sons and reconnect with Rama. Sita is so well reposted than a number of of temples are dedicated to just her across India.

My last option for my story telling project is a little different as she is not so much a lady of epics but a goddess! Shakti is know as the Hindu goddess of energy, power and strength. She is the "Great Divine Mother". She is very popular amongst villages in South India and celebrated greatly once a year. It is believed by them that she is in charge of punishing the evil and protecting the villages from evil such at diseases. She is praises through song and temples.
