Lab, Week 6

For the story lab this week I watched the two Ted talks that were available. One was by Chimamanada Ngozi Adichie and the other by Jennifer Barnes. Both were very insightful and made excellent points on not only how we treat story books but also media. While the whole point of a story is to draw us in and take us into another person’s life that is not our own, we must be mindful on how we use these feelings and information in real life.

I loved Chimamanda’s examples from her own childhood and how she was reading all of these british novels and without realizing it she was acting in her real life as the characters were. When she went to college in America her roomate, never having been introduced the Chimamanda’s culture correctly, had these preconceived notion about Nigeria due to the few books and media she had consumed.

Jennifer uses a word called “parasocial Relationships” a mindset I myself am very guilty of having. Through books, movies, tv shows and more we form these relationships with people we truly do not know. We have a bond with them because we feel they are our friends even though we have never spoken to them. We care more about made up characters than we do about real people. This is a slippery slope!

I think it is important to keep both these women’s lectures in mind when approaching any form of media. Media is only a glimmer of real life.
